Build your own
Greenland Kayak Paddle
in a 5-day workshop on Washington Island!
Join Bonnie Burnham
Washington Island woodworker and paddler
and let her assist you in building a Greenland kayak paddle.
The Greenland Paddle was designed for its ease of paddling and its natural beauty. We'll hand hew these paddles from white pine or cedar and each builder can decide on their own finish.
The Greenland Paddle was created by the Inuit People of Greenland. The Inuit taught the Europeans how to kayak and to do the life saving "roll." The skinny construction contrasts with the modern, wide bladed construction of modern paddles. This makes it easier to "brace" and/or "roll". Because the paddle "slips" at the beginning of each stroke, it makes for less fatigue on a long distance paddle. Another advantage to this paddle is that we can custom fit it to each individual's dimensions. Your personally hand hewn paddle can become a trusted friend on a long journey or a family heirloom above your fireplace!
The five-day, three to four hours a day wooden paddle workshop starts on Monday, June 13 and runs through Friday, June 17. We'll meet at the Red Barn Ice House at 10:00 a.m. and work until noon. Bring a bag lunch and drink for a quick break mid-day. We'll call it a day around 2:00 in the afternoon.
All materials are supplied. No experience necessary. Each paddle is customized to match the builder's specific body measurements.
This workshop is sponsored by WICKE and put on by Washington Island woodworker and paddler Bonnie Burnham.
Fee: $100.00
